Jen-Ken Kilns | Troubleshooting LAG & TCL Errors (120V, 3-Button Controllers)
Some common error messages you might see on your 120-volt Jen-Ken kiln’s three-key controller are LAG or TCL. Let’s break down what those mean and how to fix them.
What Do LAG and TCL Mean?
Both errors indicate that the kiln isn’t heating.
First Things to Check
- On ProFusion 16 Fiber Kilns: The most common cause is that the switch on the kiln itself (not the controller) hasn’t been flipped on. Make sure the switch on the back of the kiln is up and in the “on” position.
- Power Connection: Ensure the kiln is plugged securely into the controller.
Troubleshooting - Next Steps
- Start a program with a FULL ramp rate at the beginning.
- Watch the relay light:
If it doesn’t come on and stay on, you’ll need to change the relay.
If your kiln doesn’t have a safety relay, both lights should still cycle together in unison. If they don’t, replace both relays.
Checking the Elements (Coils)
If the relay lights are working correctly but the kiln still isn’t heating, inspect the element. A broken element may look like:
- A gap
- A burn mark
- A crack in the coil
